This course introduced me to the field of Human Resources including responsibilities, strategic planning; organizational governance; consulting with line management; organizational design.

Assignment Type: Group

Skills: Critical Thinking, Teamwork, Analytical Thinking, Leadership, Microsoft Word

Given four descriptions, we were to draw an organizational chart, and indicate the span of control at each level and why. We also needed to determine which type of organizational structure would best meet the needs of each organization and explain why. We were given permission to add additional positions if we felt they were necessary to make the design workable.

A) The Business School division of a university. The division consists of four marketing instructors, three management, five accounting and two finance. Marketing and management are in one building, accounting and finance are in another.

B) A research lab, where a total of 10 chemists and doctors are working on several different types of research. All experiments are related to one particular disease. Often one experiment must be completed before another can be started, so coordination among researchers is very important.

C) An assembly plant with sections consisting of five groups of six workers each. Each group has the responsibility of completing several stages of the assembly of the product before it moves on to the next group. In the plant, there are a total of three sections, all of which are working on the same product simultaneously. The finished product from the groups of all three sections goes to a separate quality control group, which checks out all products assembled in the plant.

D) Think of an organization to which you belong.
