This course that was broken in to two parts. The first part taught me the history of unions; the structure and types of unions; an understanding of the collective agreement; the grievance and arbitration process; and the certification of unions.
The second part of this course taught me about collective agreement negotiations including the negotiation process; strikes and lockouts; just cause for dismissal; employee discipline; understanding sexual harassment in the workplace.

ASSIGNMENT: GRIEVANCES FROM THE PAST

Each of us were paired with another person in the class. That person was to provide three potential grievances to me (shop steward). As the shop steward, I was to write a memo to both the union executives as to why the issue was or was not a grievance. I was to write a memo to the labour committee as well with suggestions to prevent this type of issue from happening again.

Using one of the grievable issues presented in the last assignment, I was to research three cases backing up my argument as to why they supported the grievance.
ASSIGNMENT: EMPLOYEE DISCIPLINE SCENARIOS

In pairs, we were given 16 incidents. With each incident we were required to create a story surrounding that incident. From there, we were to determine the actions to be taken as well as the reasoning for the actions taken.

In groups, we were told that we were a part of a new Sexual Harassment Committee who was in the process of creating a Sexual Harassment Policy but had just received our first sexual harassment complaint before being able to implement it. Using the scenario given, we were assigned to create our policy as well as create a remedy for the complaint brought forward. Our complaint was in a college environment between a student and they teacher.
